14 Places to Eat in the Avenues
/The Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City is located just slightly northeast of Downtown. It’s built into the foothills between the Capitol & the University of Utah. I am 100% partial, but I think it’s one of the best neighborhoods in the city. I’ve lived here for 12 years now and love my neighbors, the schools, the walkability, and the proximity to both downtown and the foothill trails.
Did you know that there are 14 different restaurants in the Avenues!?! I didn’t realize we had so many until I listed them yesterday. I’ve eaten at 12 of them myself and they are all locally owned and all great. (I will remedy my shortcomings ASAP.) I’ll list them here with links to their website you so can check them out too!
Coffee Shops
We have four coffee shops in the Avenues - Java Jo’s, Jack Mormon Coffee, Avenues Publik, and Cafe on 1st. Cafe on 1st is the coziest with places to hang inside and out, Java Joes is a drive through, and Publik and Jack Mormon are great for dining in or out.

Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner
There are nine different restaurants where you can have breakfast, lunch, and or dinner up here. Cucina is a deli-style restaurant for both breakfast and lunch and switches to a great wine bar for dinner. In the summers they often have live music on the patio too. Straw Market is another great place to have breakfast or lunch. Their cinnamon rolls and breakfast burritos are excellent.
You can get lunch and dinner at Avenues Proper, Foodie & Sweetie, Saffron Valley, and Cafe Shambala nearly every day. Proper also has brunch on the weekends. Another great weekend brunch is Cafe 140B in the carriage house of the Ellerbeck B&B. That’s one of my favorite weekend spots.
Wildwood is open for dinner 5 nights per week and Blatch’s Backyard BBQ is a vegan BBQ spot open 2-3 days per week that consistently wins best BBQ in the state and they don’t even serve meat!

Dessert
Finally, a great dessert spot is Hatch’s Family Chocolates. They have handmade candies, ice cream, and famous hot chocolates too.
