7 Christmas Tree Care Tips for a Healthier Tree

This is my favorite time of year. I love everything about it - the decorations, gift exchanges, the treats that we make only at Christmastime, the songs, the weather - okay, maybe not the weather, but everything else is magic to me. And I especially love a live Christmas tree. They just smell soooooo good. If you decide to have a live tree in your home, it needs to be cared for well to ensure its safety and longevity. Here are some tips:

1. When you choose a tree pick one that has vibrant green needles that don't fall off easily. It should be difficult to pluck a needle from its branch. That indicates is health and freshness.

2. Before you place the tree in its stand, cut a couple inches off the bottom of the trunk. This helps it drink water more efficiently.

3. Water the tree at least daily. Make sure there is always water in that stand to keep it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

4. Place the tree at least 3 feet away from any heat sources - fireplaces, radiators, heat vents, lit candles and lamps.

5. When stringing lights on the tree use low energy, safe lighting that’s been certified by a safety testing lab. Don’t use damaged or frayed cords.

6. Turn off the tree lights every night.

7. As a precaution, keep a fire extinguisher near by in case of emergency.

Those are a few tips to keep your live Christmas tree healthier and safer. Have a great holiday season!
